Exploring the remarkable science of our wondrous world and beyond.
Hi, I’m Maya!
I'm an award-winning science writer, exploring the world to bring you the most intriguing stories about the wondrous science that surrounds us. After getting my PhD in Earth Science, I spent nearly three years as a contributing assistant editor at Smithsonian Digital News and then almost five years at National Geographic as a staff writer.
Now I’m a freelance writer and travel guide for a variety of outlets and travel companies, telling stories about our wondrous world and beyond.
Science Writer
Fascinating science surrounds us, no matter how seemingly mundane the subject. I've spent years digging into topics that many see as "boring" to unearth exciting stories of discovery, failure, triumph, and more—all in pursuit of knowledge. I'm particularly fond of telling stories about the unusual and mysterious. The most interesting stories come from moments where things didn't turn out as might be expected.

What a Rock Can Reveal
My first illustrated children’s book is now on sale! This book, aimed at ages 6 to 10, takes your kiddos on a spin through the exciting world of geology and the stories hidden in each stone.
Why are there seashells on the top of the highest peak in the world? What do the rocks look like deep under your feet? How do volcanoes create new land?
You’ll learn all these things and more in WHAT A ROCK CAN REVEAL!
Travel Guide
I've scooped up water flowing atop glaciers in Antarctica, stood on the rim of a smoldering volcano in the Canary Islands, and ventured 1,000 feet underground in Mexico's Cheve cave. Now I'm bringing these spectacular stories of science and adventure to travelers as an expert for National Geographic Expeditions and Smithsonian Journeys on tours around the world.
Speaker
I'm an experienced public speaker and have been hired for multiple lectures and events. I love captivating audiences with stories of science and adventure. I'm also dedicated to helping students and scientists learn to clearly communicate their research through talks, workshops, and panels. I'm excited to help make your next event a resounding success.
